Quick guide

What can Final Grade Calculator help you do?

Free final exam grade calculator. Enter current grade + final weight + target → see what you need on the final.

Best for

Work backwards from a target overall grade when the final exam is the only remaining weighted component. Enter the current average, final weight, and target. The tool does not account for separate attendance rules, mandatory exam participation, or bonus-credit policies.

How to use it

Current grade means the average of completed work, before applying its share of the overall grade. Enter the final weight as a percentage. For current 80, final weight 40%, and target 85, the required exam score is 92.5.

How to read the result

The calculation subtracts the completed-work contribution from the target and divides by the final weight. Scores above 100 trigger an unreachable-target warning; negative requirements display zero. Results use one decimal place, so check your course's rounding policy near a threshold.

Privacy and limits

Only three numeric inputs are used locally in the browser. The page does not connect to a learning portal or retrieve academic records. You can compare targets without entering a name, student number, or any account information.

The final weight must be above zero and no more than 100%. A displayed zero requirement is not permission to skip the exam. Confirm participation, minimum-component scores, grading scales, and other requirements with the course syllabus or instructor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is it calculated?

Formula: (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

Why over 100%?

Means even a perfect final won't reach your target. The tool will tell you clearly.
